The situation
Building Controls & Solutions distributes building automation and HVAC control products from fifteen branches across the country, including four in Texas and a Dallas location right in Topping's backyard. Their security and much of their IT ran through an outsourced MSSP, and they set out to change that: bring operations in-house, and earn a SOC 2 certification along the way.
Leaving an MSSP is harder than cancelling a contract. The provider's tooling usually leaves with them, so email and endpoint protection have to be replaced before the old coverage lapses, not after. Do it in the wrong order and you have a gap. Do it without evidence and the SOC 2 auditor has nothing to look at.
The work
Started by understanding how BCS actually operates across fifteen branches, so the replacements would fit the environment rather than a template.
Evaluated multiple email protection platforms against those requirements instead of defaulting to a single vendor.
Did the same for endpoint protection, comparing options on the merits and recommending the one that fit.
Sequenced the cutover so the new protection was in place before the MSSP's coverage ended, leaving no window uncovered.
Supported the move of day-to-day IT operations in-house, so the BCS team owns the environment and we stay available behind them.
Helped BCS assemble what the SOC 2 audit expects, and stayed engaged after implementation to keep it running cleanly.
